Period of heaviest snow Saturday evening from 6 pm - Midnight with rates of 1"+ per hour
January 2021 will end with tens of millions of Americans bracing for an impactful Winter storm that stretches from the Dakotas to Washington DC, including the Chicago area later this afternoon and lingering through late Sunday night.
This long-duration snow event will include heavy wet snow, high winds, and possible periods of freezing rain, making for difficult travel conditions throughout the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Northern Illinois, Northwest Indiana and Southern Wisconsin, from 3 pm Saturday through Sunday evening.
Precipitation will start around 3 pm Saturday and begin as snow for most of the region, though some localized areas with slightly warmer temperatures may experience a mix of rain and snow for the first few hours before eventually changing to all snow.
The period of heaviest snow is expected between the hours of 6 pm and midnight, with rates of 1-2″ per hour possible. Snow will be heavy and wet, and winds gusting to 30-35 mph will make travel much more difficult during these hours. Snow intensity significantly diminishes after midnight, continuing throughout the remainder of Sunday. Areas nearest Lake Michigan may see some hours of more intense lake effect snow Sunday evening, as the storm winds down and exits the entire area late Sunday night.
Total snow accumulation will depend on a wide range of factors: areas where precipitation started as rain may see less, lake-effect areas around Lake Michigan may see more, but a general 7-10″ can be expected by late Sunday night throughout the region, most of it accumulating Saturday evening.
As always, Arctic`s team of hard-working snow removal professionals will be monitoring situations throughout the entirety of the storm and beyond.
