A quiet but cold New Year`s Eve could turn messy for New Year`s Day, with weather watches and advisories already posted for several counties in the region for the potential of snow and ice accumulation.
The main event arrives around 8-10 am, beginning earliest in areas south and southwest of Chicago. Precipitation will be mixed, dependent on temperatures and other conditions, but will likely feature periods of freezing drizzle and freezing rain mixed with snow, eventually changing to all snow showers sometime around 4-7pm. Snow showers will continue into late Friday night, ending around midnight.
The main concern Friday will be the possibility of accumulating ice due to the freezing rain expected. An Winter Weather Advisory is posted for most of the immediate Chicago area.
In addition to possible ice accumulation of 0.10″ to 0.30″ , snowfall accumulation late Friday is forecast to be around 1-3″ for most of the area.
Saturday may see a few flurries or light snow showers before drying out for Sunday and the early part of the next week.
