A complex storm brought rain, freezing rain, and snow to the region on Tuesday. The precipitation generally started out as freezing drizzle and rain in the early afternoon, but variations in temperatures across the region resulted in different precipitation types later in the day.
Northern areas near the Illinois/Wisconsin state line saw freezing rain change to mainly wet snow, with general accumulations of 4-6″. Areas in the western suburbs along the I-88 corridor saw a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow. Southern areas along and south of I-80 saw primarily rain with only minor accumulation of snow. Ice accumulation was generally between .05″ and .25″ throughout the region.
The complexities of this mixed precipitation storm required multiple saltings due to “freezing from the ground up.” Rainfall washed away some of the initial salt laid down. This rain water then froze on the ground because of ground temperatures that remained in the 20s, despite air temperatures slightly above freezing and even rising throughout the evening hours in the southern region, requiring multiple saltings to keep up with this cycle.
