A major winter storm brought significant snowfall to parts of our area. Light rain spread into the area between 8 and 10 am and mixed with snow early afternoon. There was a band of heavy snow from Rockford to northern Lake County 1 to 4 pm where snow amounts ranged from 4 to 6.5 inches.
The main system of rain and snow spread into the area between 5 and 6 pm and changed to snow for much of the area between 6 and 7 pm except from Chicago southward and out to Joliet. Those areas saw a changeover to snow from 9 to 11 pm. There were some reports of thunder snow from St. Charles to around Elk Grove Village which resulted in higher snow compared to the rest of areas south of I-90. The snow totals from I-88 to I-80 ranged from 5 to 10 inches while 10 to 13 inches fell in Rockford to northern Lake County. La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, and Will Counties saw an average of 2 to 4 inches. Prior to the changeover to all snow, there was a period of sleet.
Winds gusted 45-55 mph area-wide resulting in downed trees, limbs and power lines. The warm Lake Michigan water temps kept amounts down near the lake. O’Hare had 8.4 inches which pushed the monthly total to 12″, the 4th snowiest November in history. Rockford had 11.7 inches which make it the top November snow event in history and the 15.6 inches for the month makes this November the snowiest in history for Rockford.
