A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of the Chicago area, as a complex lake-enhanced winter storm has shifted direction slightly to the west and south, impacting more of the area with a significant heavy snow today through early Tuesday morning.
Snow showers have already been occurring throughout Cook County and will become heavier throughout the day. Intermittent light to moderate snow will continue throughout the morning and early afternoon hours, with some sporadic lulls in activity possible.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur after 12 pm for areas nearest Lake Michigan, including Chicago; after 3 pm for southeast areas (south and east of I-55/I-57); and after 6 pm for Northwest Indiana. Rates of 1-2″ per hour are possible during the heaviest snowfall. Northwest areas outside of the Winter Storm Warning will still experience steady snow, though it is not expected to be as heavy.
Snow should end by 6 am for most of the region, except for areas right along Lake Michigan which will see light lake-effect snow showers throughout much of Tuesday.
Due to the nature of this lake-enhanced storm, snow totals will vary significantly and favor areas nearest Lake Michigan:
* Rockford area: 2″
* Northwest suburbs: 3-6″
* Eastern Kane County: 4-7″
* DuPage, Kendall and Will: 5-9″
* Northwest Indiana: 7-10″
* Cook and Lake (IL) Counties: 8-13″
Area counties included in the National Weather Service`s Winter Storm Warning are Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Jasper, Lake (IL), Lake (IN), Kankakee, Kendall, Newton, Porter and Will, as well as counties farther south. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for DeKalb, LaSalle, Kane and McHenry.
Hazardous conditions should be expected in the Warning areas, including heavy, blowing and drifting snow with low visibility.
Our active winter weather period will continue throughout the week with multiple chances of snowfall, though temperatures will gradually increase as we approach the weekend.
