A complex and messy storm system will affect the area Monday afternoon and Tuesday with a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow.
Precipitation will spread north during the evening hours as a mix of freezing rain and snow and is expected to transition to primarily freezing rain at night before finally changing over to mainly snow Tuesday morning. On and off snow showers will persist throughout the day and early evening hours on Tuesday.
This is a very complex storm system and even minor changes in surface temperatures can result in widespread variations in precipitation types and amounts throughout the region.
Generally, 2-5″ of snow and sleet is expected in far north sections, including Rockford and Waukegan; 1-2″ between I-88 and I-90; and about an inch south of I-88. Additionally, between .1″ and .25″ of ice accumulation is possible along and north of I-88.
